| OVERVIEW:
Digital
media, new media and multimedia are interchangeable terms used to describe an industry
that generates over $2 billion revenue annually and employs up to 20,000 workers.
Approximately 2,000 smaller companies are the backbone of the industry, most located in
the Greater Toronto Area. Other pickets of activity can be found throughout the country,
most notable in Montreal and Vancouver. Multimedia is utilized by many sectors including
arts, entertainment, education/training, communications, health and business. |
| HITECH SKILLS REQUIRED:
According to Human Resources Development Canada
(HRDC), the industry faces a shortage of creators and interactive designers, producers,
artist/graphic designers, system developers and marketing experts. Bill Sweetman, vice
president Internet strategy & marketing services for MultiMediator Strategy Group,
says the number one challenge is finding enough senior level people (i.e. five plus years
of experience). |
| GROWTH FACTORS:
The industry continues to grow at a phenomenal rate,
largely
as a result of the Internet. Further growth is anticipated as Internet access improves,
technologies converge, and the cost of both hardware and software continue to fall. |
EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK:
Professionals from other industries can find
work in multimedia
by combining their expertise in a certain discipline,
like architecture, with acquired
multimedia skills to produce interactive products and services. Individuals looking for
